The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Favourite, Green Book, Leave No Trace, A Quiet Place among the San Diego Film Critics Society’s 2018 awards nominations

Often left of center when it comes to critics’ awards nominations, the San Diego Film Critics Society veered to the middle this year with a field-best 9 nominations for the feel-good racial road movie Green Book, giving it mentions in Best Picture, Director, Actor (Viggo Mortensen) and Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) as well as a host of technical nods.

Elsewhere shows the group’s penchant for more eclectic fare with Leave No Trace showing up with five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Debra Granik among its five mentions.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which just debuted on Netflix late last month, came in with a second-best seven nominations.

The Favourite was next with six; Boy Erased and Eighth Grade came in with 5 apiece.

Rather shocking snubs came to If Beale Street Could Talk and First Man, both of which earned zero nominations. Vice got just one – Christian Bale in Best Actor.
