‘Green Book’ wins top Mill Valley Film Festival Audience Award; ‘The Hate U Give,’ ‘Boy Erased’ grab US Cinema honors

Fresh off its People’s Choice Award win at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, Peter Farrelly’s Green Book is now the Overall Favorite of the 41st Mill Valley Film Festival.

The film, which chronicles the real-life relationship between virtuoso pianist Don Shirley (played by Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali) and his driver Tony Lip (Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen) as they trek through the south on a concert tour in 1962.

Previous winners have included Mudbound (2017) and Lion (2016).

The Hate U Give, from director George Tillman Jr., won the Audience Favorite for US Cinema with Boy Erased, from actor/director Joel Edgerton, came in second in US Cinema. Previous winners here have included Molly’s Game (2017), Moonlight (2016) and Loving (2016).

The Hate U Give is currently in limited release from 20th Century Fox. Boy Erased is set for November 2nd from Focus Features. Green Book will be released by Universal Pictures on November 23rd.
