‘Hadestown,’ ‘Ain’t Too Proud’ and ‘Tootsie’ top 2019 Tony nominations

The modern take on Greek mythology, Hadestown, dominated the 2019 Tony Award nominations, leading the field 14 nods on Tuesday, including one for Best Musical. Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, a celebration of the music of the Temptations, and Tootsie, an update of the Oscar-winning 1982 comedy, were right behind with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.

The big shock of the morning was not that To Kill a Mockingbird earned a healthy nine nominations; it was that one of them wasn’t the big one – Best Play. The hugely successful production of Harper Lee’s classic novel earned three acting nominations plus a directing nod for Bartlett Sher. Network, the adaptation of Paddy Chayefsky Oscar-winning film, also found acting and directing nominations but a snub in the Best Play category.

Other top-scoring musicals included the adaptation of Beetlejuice with eight and The Prom with seven, rounding out the Best Musical nominees. For Best Play, The Ferryman led with nine, Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus with seven, Ink with six, Choir Boy with four and Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me, which earned only one other nomination – for Schreck as Actress in a Leading Role.

Play revivals were strong this year with Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, The Boys in the Band, Burn This, Torch Song and The Waverly Gallery all nominated. The Best Revival of a Musical nominees were Kiss Me, Kate and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!

The 2019 Tony Awards will air live on CBS June 9th and be hosted by James Corden. Here is the full list of nominations.
