HBO and Showtime Reveal 2013/2014 Emmy Category Placements

HBO and Showtime have revealed their category placements for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards and there are some head-scratchers. HBO has never been that much of a supporter of the younger folks in Game of Thrones in terms of Emmy pushes but even Jack Gleeson, after last night’s epic Purple Wedding episode, gets the shaft. He doesn’t appear in the Supporting or Guest categories. Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner (Arya and Sansa, respectively) do however appear in the Supporting Actress categories. They’re probably not much of a match for the previously nominated Emilia Clarke or even Lena Headey though. HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, last year’s winner in the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category lists no fewer than nine gentlemen in the running. Jeffrey Wright would appear to have the best chance this year.

After announcing that the anthology series True Detective would be submitted for Drama Series instead of Miniseries as most expected, HBO has also decided to push Treme, a former four-season series, in the Miniseries category for its five-episode wrap-up. The show has never been an awards magnet so it’s unlikely this will have much of an impact but with True Detective out of the picture it does open up the possibility.

Over at Showtime, they recently announced a category switch for Shameless from Drama to Comedy. Joan Cusack has been nominated in the Guest Actress in a Drama Series category for three years in a row (the show’s only Emmy nods) and stands an excellent shot at a fourth. Although Emmy Rossum probably won’t benefit from the switch, William H. Macy might. His role and performance is far less dramatic than Rossum’s but Showtime also has Don Cheadle (House of Lies) and Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) to push and they’ve both been Emmy nominated for their roles two years running. The strangest choice Showtime has made though is to push Homeland‘s Damian Lewis in Lead for a season in which he barely appeared. The show, after a gangbusters first season of Emmy wins (including Drama Series, breaking Mad Men‘s four-season streak), fell out of favor with a sharp downturn in its second season with just Claire Danes and the show’s writing repeating wins.

  • Truly shocked Johnathon Schaech did not get a mention for his role as Sean Walker in the outstanding drama Ray Donovan. Schaech's scenes with Jon Voight and Liev Schreiber were great.

  • Ray Donovan is an outstanding show! Sean Walker (Johnathon Schaech) was such a pivotal character to season one. This was an emmy winner performance for Jonathon Schaech!
