Here We Go Again! ABBA teases long-awaited new music in cryptic tweet

Years after promising fans new music, it seems ABBA is preparing to share an all-new experience with fans.

From their official Twitter account early Thursday morning, the iconic Swedish pop quartet shared an image of our eclipsed planets, simply captioning the pic: “Join us at Abbavoyage.com #ABBAVoyage.” The post also contains the date of Sept. 2, 2021 — just one week from today.

At Abbavoyage.com, users have an opportunity to register “to be the first in line to hear more about ABBA Voyage.” Registrees will be asked to provide an email address as well as their first and last name.

ABBA first promised fans new music several years ago, initially announcing that they’d record two new songs called “I Still Have Faith In You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down.” Not long after, the group revealed that they’d been working on a “Virtual Abba” experience with American Idol creator Simon Fuller, but the project was delayed multiple times. The number of original songs the band would be releasing has fluctuated in various reports since the initial announcements, but it is now expected to be closer to five or six.

ABBA skyrocketed to fame in 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with their hit “Waterloo.” Their historic win was referenced in Netflix’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, which also saw a number of characters perform the tune.

The Swedish group — made up of  Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad — are among the most commercially successful music acts in history, having sold over 100 million records worldwide.

In the nearly four decades since the band split, they have seen their music earn a newfound popularity thanks to the Broadway musical Mamma Mia! and its successful film adaption — as well as its sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

In 2018, Billboard reported that ABBA’s sales were up a whopping 57% after the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. The movie’s soundtrack, which featured Cher, Meryl Streep, Lily James and more belting out iconic tunes, also debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release. Cher also released a full album of ABBA covers in September 2018 debuting at number three on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 153,000 album-equivalent units, becoming Cher’s highest debut sales week for an album in the United States.

Additionally, the sequel’s release prompted the original movie’s soundtrack to re-enter the charts hitting No. 89. After its 2008 release, the soundtrack hit No. 1 on the charts.

Rumors have circulated about a third film being created for the franchise, with producer Judy Craymer telling Daily Mail last summer that she was supposed to be working on a third installment when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

“I think one day there will be another film because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see,” she said at the time. “I know Universal would like me to do it.”
