WandaVision, Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit, The Underground Railroad top Limited Series categories

The Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) announced the nominees of its inaugural television awards this morning where Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso scores 8 nominations followed by Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale with 7.

The awards are the first of its kind to separate streaming and broadcast network categories, giving a wide berth to celebrate more shows and more performances in an effort to capture how we watched television in 2020 and the first half of 2021. As with the Television Academy’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the HCA TV Awards number of nominations in each category is based on total submissions.

Mckenna Grace (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Brooklynn Prince (Home Before Dark) along with HCA president Scott Menzel and Jana Nagase announced the complete list of nominees for the 1st Annual HCA TV Awards via a live stream earlier today on the organization’s official YouTube Channel.

Leading the streaming nominations is Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, which received eight nominations including Best Streaming Comedy Series, Best Actor for Jason Sudeikis, dual nominations in Best Supporting Actress for Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham, and four of the seven spots in Best Supporting Actor for Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Jeremy Swift, and Nick Mohammed.

For network programming, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist led with six nominations, including acting nods for Jane Levy, Skylar Astin and Alex Newell. Next was Young Rock with five then Law & Order: Organized Crime and This Is Us both with four apiece, all from NBC. The network received the most nominations out of all of the traditional broadcast networks with a total of 30 with Superstore and Mr. Mayor helping add to that total.

HBO led the Cable categories with a total of 29 nominations. Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, the Euphoria two-part specialand Lovecraft Country all received plenty of love from the organization. HBO’s streaming counterpart HBO Max also received several nominations with Hacks and The Flight Attendant gathering the most nominations.

Netflix continued to lead the way with streaming, earning a total of 28 nominations spread across multiple categories including Best Streaming Docuseries, Documentary Television Movie, or Non-Fiction Series. The Crown received the most nominations of all the Netflix submissions with a total of six: Best Streaming Series, Drama plus five acting nominations.
