Interview: Antony Starr on the Redeemability of Homelander and the Layers of Social Commentary in Season 3 of ‘The Boys’  [VIDEO]

As the leader of The Seven, Homelander (Antony Starr) commands authority and will stand for absolutely no insubordination on The Boys, ready to literally eliminate anyone who tries to talk back to him. It’s a formidable performance from Starr, who captures the delight Homelander feels in wielding power and his vulnerability when he feels threatened by those who would seek to try to bring him down.

I spoke with Starr about whether he enjoys playing Homelander (he does) and whether he thinks there’s anything redeemable about him (not so much). He addressed the way in which the show mirrors our society and the unfortunate truth that some viewers can’t comprehend the messages it’s trying to convey about abuse of power and totalitarianism. He also shared how audiences who like The Boys and haven’t yet checked out his previous TV series, Banshee (streaming on Max), will likely be quite satisfied once they do.

The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video. Starr is Emmy-eligible in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
