Interview: Desus Nice and The Kid Mero (‘Desus & Mero’) on calling the Mayweather/Paul Fight, Glenn Close and the State of Late Night [VIDEO]

At last weekend’s boxing spectacle between Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul in Miami, the worlds of athletics and entertainment collided in a flashy (and albeit controversial) way that seems to increasingly define the world of combat sports. While Mayweather and Paul topped the card, there were two names who blew up social media all night: Desus and Mero.

Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, hosts of Desus & Mero on Showtime, called the fight from ringside, imbuing the evening with their signature style, humor and unabashedly infectious energy. It will be the first of many such opportunities, if they have their way. And they usually do.

Desus & Mero, which debuted in 2019 and featured Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as its inaugural guest, has only grown in scope and influence since. The show has boasted appearances from the likes of David Letterman to Whoopi Goldberg, Usain Bolt to some guy named Obama.

The show has become a place where pop culture and politics collide, in a forum that’s as honest, transparent and of-the-moment as anything else on television. 

Daniel Trainor spoke with Desus and Mero about their experience in Miami, why the concept of late night television no longer exists, getting hyped up by Glenn Close and their thoughts on the New York City mayoral race.

Season 3 of Desus & Mero is Emmy eligible for Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Talk Series and returns for Season 4 on Sunday, June 20th, airing Sundays and Thursdays at 11 pm ET on Showtime.
