When Golden Globe nominations were announced in the category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy last week, big-name past winners like Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, and Emma Stone were joined by an unexpected international inclusion: Alma Pöysti. The Finnish star of Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves may not be a household name, but she absolutely deserves to be in such great company.
I spoke with Pöysti about the delightful surprise of her nomination and having her film compete in the same category as Barbie. She shared the rewarding process of working with the acclaimed Kaurismäki and her costar Jussi Vatanen, and the joy of watching audiences see the film succeed at being funny in another language.
Fallen Leaves is Finland’s official Oscar submission for Best International Feature.
