NBC’s This Is Us captivated the world with its nonlinear brand of storytelling and highly emotional narrative full of peaks and valleys that have earned the show 37 Emmy nominations and four wins so far.
The show seemed to improve every season, largely thanks to a fantastic ensemble. What started out as a story about the bravery of Pearson patriarch Jack (played brilliantly by Milo Ventimiglia) quickly revealed to the world that it was a tale of how Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore) had managed to keep the family together under such tragic circumstances. An argument could be made that Moore’s character and performance have been the glue that has held the show together. In its final season, the Emmy-nominated star arguably turned in the finest work of her career as Rebecca.
I spoke with Moore about her journey playing the Pearson matriarch and the odyssey these multiple decades of portraying this character have been. We go back to the beginning, discussing how she got the part and how her approach has evolved over six seasons. She also touches on the pressures of portraying a character at different stages in their battle with Alzheimer’s, mentioning families going through this with a loved one, saying, “I want them to feel seen and represented, and for them not to feel as isolated.”
