Interview: Mark Mylod on getting perfect shots in ‘Succession’ and giving the cast “freebies” to open their performances [VIDEO]

If there’s a part of Succession that you still think about to this day, chances are that Mark Mylod had something to do with it. Whether it’s Producing, directing, or writing Mylod has had his hand in every aspect of the show in one way or another. His success shouldn’t come as any shock. Mark has earned him a Primetime Emmy Award, a Producers Guild of America Award (PGA), A Directors Guild of America Award (DGA) and two British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA).

Mylod’s best-known work before Succession would likely be Entourage, Game of Thrones, and Shameless and in all three of these shows, he served in similar capacities. However, his big break can be traced back to his directorial debut in an episode of Once Upon a Time in 2011. One takeaway from our conversation is that he seemed to take something from each project he undertook into the next one. Mylod is never complacent and is always looking to evolve.

The Emmy-winning director goes into great detail about how every show element is painstakingly crafted, and they won’t move on until they feel the crew has their shot. It could take one or one hundred takes; it doesn’t matter.

Anyone who is seeking spoilers for season 4, this isn’t that type of interview. But, if a fan is wanting a deep dive into what makes this show so special, then look no further.

Mark Mylod is Emmy-nominated in the categories of Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the episode “All the Bells Say” from Succession.
