Interview: Seth Meyers talks about what excites him the most about ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ and offers invaluable advice to aspiring writers [VIDEO]

Seth Meyers returns! Why? Is it because after earning writing and directing nominations every year since 2017, his show earned its first-ever Emmy nomination for Variety Talk Series? Well, of course, that’s a big reason for him joining us again, but there are so many areas we didn’t touch on in our first interview.

In fact, I’m not even sure a series of interviews would suffice. Meyers’ show has demonstrated a willingness to adapt to the current climate whether it’s COVID, virtual shows, no audiences, and even tackling political topics some would shy away from. Meyers in many ways has captured the spirit that Letterman had when he was in that very time slot, so long ago. Just go with it and see where it leads.

When it began, Late Night with Seth Meyers was, in many ways, a work in progress when it first began. Meyers started attempting to do the opening monologue that many hosts did. Some of the bits worked, and some of them didn’t. When he was finally doing “his” show, it started taking off. Now, with hugely popular recurring skits like “Forced Friendship,” “Day Drinking,” and “Corrections,” Late Night with Seth Meyers has become sharper, wittier, and among the best of the late night talk shows. Meyers and I talked about the metamorphosis of the show, where he gives some excellent advice to aspiring writers.

Meyers is also an accomplished children’s author and spoke glowingly about how the schedule he now has is much better for his family than his days on Saturday Night Live. He was very forthright about how nervous he is now that he’s nominated and even promised – on camera – to bring my son Charlie to the Emmys as he was doing yoga off to the side of our zoom and caught Meyers’ eye. Seth, his people will have to call your people and work that all out.

Seth Meyers is Emmy-nominated in the category of Outstanding Variety Talk Series for Late Night with Seth Meyers.
