When Tituss Burgess snatched the role of Titus Andromedon on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” in 2015, he was at a career crossroads. The actor, mostly known for his Broadway credits at the time, was on a break from the stage and got cast on the Netflix show which, despite its pedigree, offered no guarantees.
Now, some five Emmy nominations later, his iconic performance helped make Kimmy Schmidt one of the most beloved comedies of the streaming era and made his face instantly recognizable around the world.
With Titus Andromedon in his rearview mirror, he’s ready to focus on Tituss Burgess. Earlier this summer, he released a music video for his Pride single “Dance MF” and he’s set to host Netflix’s karaoke competition series Sing On!, premiering next month.
Nominated this year for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie for the final entry in the Schmidterverse, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend, Burgess talked to Daniel Trainor and Sam Stone about the journey he’s been on, the future of live theater, his own foray into music and why he’s so obsessed with Michaela Coel and I May Destroy You.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend is available on Netflix.
