While Monday’s Academy Award nominations brought some surprises, one of the biggest locks this season was Apple’s critically raved feature, Wolfwalkers being nominated for the Best Animated Feature. The nomination was historic as it was among the very first for Apple ever this year.
Wolfwalkers has won an AFI FEST prize and has been named best animated film across multiple critics groups, including by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, Dublin Critics Circle, Chicago Film Critics Association, San Diego Film Critics Society, Alliance of Women Film Journalists, and more. A BAFTA and Golden Globe Award-nominated film, Wolfwalkers is also up for 10 Annie Awards and was nominated by the Producers Guild of America in the category of Best Animated Feature.
Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart’s started turning heads at the London Film Festival and made its way through award season posting numerous wins with various guilds and even scoring a Golden Globe Nomination. While some might dismiss the idea of two boys from Ireland pulling off an upset in this category, It would be wise not to count out a Cartoon Saloon release backed by Apple TV+ which would love to win its first Oscar for the streaming giant. Upon hearing the news of their nomination, AwardsWatch reached out to Moore and Stewart.
This week, Wolfwalkers will be returning to cinemas starting with a New York theatrical run at the Angelika Film Center beginning Friday, March 19. Additional theaters in major North American markets will be added throughout March and April.
We were able to speak with Moore shortly after the news broke of Wolfwalkers nomination and the part of this conversation which stood out to me was how moore actually found out the news. Check it out!
