Among this year’s five Oscar-nominated live-action short films is The Long Goodbye, which begins with a peaceful family day and quickly erupts into vicious and hateful violence. We had the chance to speak with director Aneil Karia when his film was on the shortlist, and it’s great to have him back again, this time with his star and co-writer, Riz Ahmed.

In addition to discussing their collaborative process, Ahmed and Karia reflected on the unfortunately universal relevance of the film’s subject matter and how some of his past roles relate to his part here. They also addressed their decision to release the film for free on Ahmed’s YouTube channel (you can watch here).

The Long Goodbye is nominated for the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film. Watch the full interview below.
