In his deeply American story, Minari writer/director Lee Isaac Chung gives us a bit of his own life as he tells the story of Jacob and Monica (played by Steven Yeun and Yeri Han), Korean immigrants who, a mother (Youn Yuh-Jung), daughter (Noel Kate Cho) and young son (breakout star Alan S. Kim), move to an Arkansas farm in the 1980s in search of the American dream.
Steven Yeun is most known for his role as Glenn in the massive AMC television hit The Walking Dead while Youn Yuh-jung is a legend in Korean cinema. Yeri Han is a staple in Korean film and television and young Alan S. Kim marks his film debut with Minari.
What began as the 2020 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award winner is now a huge critics’ favorite and nominated for a Golden Globe and three Screen Actors Guild Awards, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, AwardsWatch writer Dewey Singleton spoke briefly to the director and cast of Minari on their personal journeys in making the film.
Minari is now playing in select theaters with VOD screenings in the A24 Screening Room.
