“Music matters”

So said Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy CEO upon announcing the nominations for the 64th Grammy Awards on Tuesday morning where he was joined by Grammy and Oscar winner H.E.R., Oscar winner and multi-Grammy nominee Jon Batiste, 7-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish, all of whom earned top field nominations today.

“This is an exciting day for music,” continued Mason Jr. “These nominations beautifully reflect today’s broad and diverse musical landscape. I congratulate all of the nominees and everyone who submitted work. I’m also so proud of our voters. They voted in record numbers and brought their very best to evaluating the work of their peers, and I thank them on behalf of the entire music community.”

This year’s top nominees are Jon Batiste (11), Justin Bieber (8), Doja Cat (8), H.E.R. (8), Billie Eilish (7), and Olivia Rodrigo (7).

The top general field categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist were expanded to 10 nominees to continue the Recording Academy’s commitment to embracing diversity. The Grammys received over 22,000 submissions this year and in a break from 30 years of voting past, the nominations in all 86 categories were decided on by the entire voting membership and not committees, who represent all genres and creative disciplines, including recording artists, songwriters, producers, mixers, and engineers.

ABBA, who returned with their first new music in over 40 years scored their first ever Grammy nomination of their career: Record of the Year for “I Still Have Faith in You.”

The stage is also set for another Taylor Swidft/Kanye West battle, this time in Album of the Year. Swift won the award last year (for folklore), her third overall, but this year evermore is her only nomination. West’s only other nomination is for Rap Album (Donda).

Winner voting takes place from December 6, 2021 to January 5, 2022. The 64th Grammy Awards will be held on Monday, January 31, 2022, at 8-11:30 p.m. ET / 5-8:30 p.m. PT live from the Crypto.com Arena (formerly STAPLES Center) in Los Angeles.
