The American Film Institute agrees: there’s nothing like a dame, which is why they’ve chosen Dame Julie Andrews as their next recipient of their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, as was announced today.
Andrews, whose career spans over seventy years, has illuminated the stage and screen and harnessed an incredibly diverse legion of fans spread across nations and entire generations, who have been captivated by her warmth, charm and incredible talents in all areas of the arts. This lifetime achievement award is just another in a long line of accolades for the iconic performer, who has won a staggering amount of accolades throughout her career, including an Academy Award, two Emmys, three Grammys, six Golden Globes and countless others, all of which have recognised her astonishing work as an actress, singer and humanitarian, dedicated to numerous special causes around the world.
Whether its her iconic performance as the titular character in Mary Poppins, the troublesome but effortlessly lovable Maria in The Sound of Music, her revolutionary double (or is it triple?) act in Victor/Victoria, or any of her astonishing work spread throughout the years, there is very little doubt that Dame Julie is more than deserving of this recognition. Her remarkable career has previously been recognized with a Kennedy Centre Honor (2001), as well as being inducted into the canon of Disney Legends (1991). She also recently received an Honorary Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month.
AFI will bestow the honor on Dame Julie on April 25th next year, in one of their distinctive star-studded galas, where some of the icon’s friends and admirers will gather to celebrate her work and pay tribute to a true entertainment legend who broke boundaries and delighted audiences across the world for decades.
