MILL VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES
A TRIBUTE TO JULIE DASH
OCTOBER 14TH, 2016

SAN RAFAEL, CA (September 19, 2016) – The Mill Valley Film Festival is proud to honor director Julie Dash with a Tribute, featuring an on-stage conversation, a clip reel from her body of work, a screening of DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST, and the presentation of the MVFF Award.

Tribute to Julie Dash
Filmmaker and author Julie Dash combined cinematic technique honed from her graduate work at UCLA during the “LA Rebellion” movement of Black Cinema and a desire to create uniquely female African American narrative films with her personal history of rich Gullah heritage to produce the 1991 groundbreaking and internationally acclaimed Daughters of the Dust, the first feature-length film by an African American woman with theatrical release in the US and the only African American woman with a feature film inducted, by the Library of Congress, into the National Film Registry where in 2004 it joined a select group of American films preserved and protected as national treasures. Dash has continued to produce impressive works, including The Rosa Parks Story, Incognito, Funny Valentines, Love Song, and Subway Stories. Her upcoming projects include Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl, a documentary about writer- actor-griot-culinary anthropologist Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor.

About DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST
US 1992, 112 min
Director Julie Dash
Exquisitely cinematic and profoundly imagined, Julie Dash’s lyrical story of family migration is unlike any other, establishing her as a strikingly original artist in the pantheon of American cinema. This seminal, award-winning work continues to inspire (notably, Beyoncé’s homage, Lemonade); its newly restored digital print reveals the gorgeous visual palette.
