After winning an Emmy just a few months ago for portraying Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (among other characters), Kate McKinnon returned to the stage of Saturday Night Live last night to play her, possibly, one last time. After Clinton’s shocking loss on Tuesday to Donald Trump, McKinnon appeared onstage in full Clinton garb to offer solace to the sadness, grief and everything that the popular vote of Americans have felt this week in regards to the election, while also serving as a moving tribute the recently passed Leonard Cohen, with a stripped down version of “Hallelujah.” Just when you think you’ve heard this song enough times you’ll realize you haven’t.
There are lyrics in the song that ring true with piercing accuracy but it’s McKinnon’s tearful final battle cry of “I’m not giving up, and neither should you” that marks this as such a moving experience.
