‘King Richard,’ ‘ tick, tick…BOOM!’ and ‘Mare of Easttown’ win top 2022 ACE Eddie Award prizes

The 72nd Annual ACE Eddie Awards, celebrating the best in film editing for film and television, were held tonight at a 50% capacity in-person event held at the Theater at the ACE Hotel and hosted by musician, DJ and actor Lance Robertson AKA DJ Lance Rock, where King Richard, tick, tick…BOOM! and Mare of Easttown were the major winners.

In the film categories, where winners are split between drama and comedy (either of which can include musicals), Pamela Martins’ cutting of Reinaldo Marcus Green’s King Richard, starring Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis as the parents of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, won in a slight upset over fellow Oscar nominees Dune and The Power of the Dog. This is Martin’s first ACE win in three nominations. In comedy, the duo of Myron Kerstein and Andrew Weisblum won for the feature film musical version of tick, tick…BOOM!, starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. This is the first win in two nominations for Kerstein and first win in seven nominations for Weisblum.

Since 2000, the ACE Eddie winner, Dramatic or Comedy, has gone on to win the Oscar 14 times, most recently with Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) and Dunkirk (2017). The last two years the ACE winners have lost the Oscar; Parasite and Jojo Rabbit to Ford v Ferrari in 2019 and The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Palm Springs to Sound of Metal in 2020.

In television, which saw several categories see single shows with two or more nominations, the winners were Succession in Drama Series for the episode “All the Bells Say,” Hacks in Single-Camera Comedy Series for the episode “1.69 Million” and Mare of Easttown in Limited Series. Kevin Can F**k Himself took up all three nominations in the multi-camera comedy category and won for the episode “Live Free or Die.”

Presenters included Debbie Allen, Andy Garcia, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloé Zhao, Aunjanue Ellis, Reinaldo Marcus Green, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Emilio Estevez, Danny Strong, Nick Wechsler and Tom Blyth. 

The ACE Golden Eddie Award went to the Sundance Institute. The ACE Golden Eddie Award traditionally recognizes a filmmaker who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film but ACE broke tradition for the first time in its history this year by recognizing a film organization. “This year the ACE Board voted to honor an entity rather than an individual,” stated ACE president Kevin Tent. “Since 1981, the Sundance Institute has launched some of the most talented and vital voices in global film. Having just celebrated their 40-year anniversary, the Sundance Institute’s impact on our art and industry is immeasurable. ACE is proud to recognize their extraordinary contributions to cinema.” Founding Senior Director, Artist Programs Michelle Satter, accepted the honor on behalf of the Sundance Institute, which was presented by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao.

The Anne V. Coates Award for Student Editing went to Guanqing Lin of American Film Institute.

Veteran film editors Lillian E. Benson, ACE (the first woman of color accepted into the org) and Richard Chew, ACE received Career Achievement Awards for their outstanding contributions to film editing. “Lillian and Richard are rock star editors and represent the very best of our craft and profession,” stated ACE president Kevin Tent, ACE. “Not only have they had incredibly prolific careers, but they’ve given back to our community in many ways, not the least of which by mentoring the next generation of editors. We are thrilled to honor these two special editors and look back at their amazing careers,” he continued. Emmy-winning choreographer/director/producer actress presented Benson with her award, actor/director Emilio Estevez presented Chew with his.
