Kristen Stewart set to play screen icon Jean Seberg in ‘Against All Enemies’

Kristen Stewart will portray screen icon Jean Seberg (Breathless) for Una director Benedict Andrews. The film, currently titled Against All Enemies, focuses on an ambitious young FBI agent (Jack O’Connell) assigned to investigate the iconic actress when she becomes involved in the tumultuous civil rights movement of 1960s Los Angeles.

Stewart has made strides to rid herself of her Twilight-era with films like Clouds of Sils Maria for Olivier Assayas, for which she won the César award for Best Actress, the only American woman ever to do so. Seberg, the darling of the French New Wave era, became romantically and politically involved with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal (to be played by Anthony Mackie) and became a target of the FBI for her part in the Black Power movement of the 1960s.

Andrews is currently directing his West End production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof which stars O’Connell, Sienna Miller and Colm Meaney. “Anna and Joe’s brilliant screenplay combines the torque and epic scope of a conspiracy thriller with the raw intimacy of a love story. I’m thrilled to be working with such an extraordinary ensemble, led by some of the most outstanding actors working today in Kristen, Jack and Anthony. I can’t wait for the collision of these electric talents as Jean, Jack and Hakim,” he said.

The film co-stars Ben Mendelsohn (Darkest Hour), Colm Meaney (Hell on Wheels), Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) and Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies).

Shooting on the film begins this summer with newly-minted Oscar winner Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) as the lenser. It will be produced by Bruce Kavanaugh-Jones, Kate Garwood and Stephen Hopkins and written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse.
