‘Ma Rainey,’ ‘Pinocchio,’ ‘Bridgerton’ win 2021 Make-Up and Hair Stylists Guild awards (MUAH)

The 8thAnnual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists guild awards were handed out on Saturday and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won both period hair and period make-up and Pinocchio won the special make-up effects award for motion picture. Both are Oscar-nominated alongside MUAH nominees Mank and Hillbilly Elegy (who both went home empty-handed tonight) as well as Emma.

Birds of Prey was another double winner, taking both contemporary prizes for hair and make-up.

Previous motion picture winners here that translated to Oscar wins include 2019’s Bombshell, 2018’s Vice, 2017’s Darkest Hour and 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Presenters are set to include Jennifer Garner (Yes Day), Judith Light (The Politician), Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian, Mulan), Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Cheryl Burke (Dancing with the Stars), Temuera Morrison (The Mandalorian), Doug Jones (Star Trek: Discovery), A.J. Buckley (SEAL Team), and Michael Cohen (Henry Danger) among others.

On the television side, winners included Schitt’s Creek, Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit and The Mandalorian. Saturday Night Live won two awards and the recipients accepted their awards and made their speeches in the middle a live episode in the make-up room.

Award-winning actor Eddie Murphy, best known for his work in the films Coming to America, Beverly Hills Cop, The Nutty Professor and Dreamgirls, among many others, will receive the Distinguished Artisan Award at the 8th Annual  Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (MUAHS, IATSE Local 706) celebrating the prolific spectrum of his versatile four-decade acting career on screen and television. Presenting Murphy with the Distinguished Artisan Award to Murphy will be his Coming to America and Coming 2 America co-star Arsenio Hall. The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award is given annually to those whose body of work in the film and television industry was richly enhanced by the consistent collaboration of make-up and hair styling artistry creating memorable characters throughout their career. Previous recipients include Sir Patrick Stewart, Melissa McCarthy, Gary Oldman, Johnny Depp, Ryan Murphy and Guillermo del Toro.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards honoring an extraordinary spectrum of acclaimed work, exceptional contributions to the motion picture arts and sciences, and outstanding service to their union or the entertainment industry will be presented to Matthew Mungle (Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Albert Nobbs, Hillbilly Elegy), Oscar and Emmy– winning make-up artist and presented by Glenn Close, and Terry Baliel (Hairspray Live!, Deadwood, Miss Rose White), Emmy-winning hair stylist, presented by Scarlett Johansson.

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show.
