‘Ma Rainey,’ ‘Westworld’ and ‘Schitt’s Creek’ top 23rd Costume Designers Guild Awards winners (CDG)

The 23rd Costume Designers Guild Awards were being held tonight and live-streamed worldwide on their Twitter – @CostumeAwards where Oscar nominees Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Mulan both won awards in respective film categories. Lana Condor hosted the show.

In contemporary films are the designers from Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Da 5 Bloods, Promising Young Woman and The Prom were nominated with Promising Young Woman winning. In her tearful acceptance speech, designer Nancy Steiner made a plea for pay equity and increased pay for costume designers specifically.

Competing in the period film category were Emma., Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank and One Night in Miami. 89-year old Ann Roth won for Ma Rainey, making her the oldest winner in CDG history. In the sci-fi/fantasy category, Dolittle, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Pinocchio and Wonder Woman 1984 were all nominated but Bina Daigler’s work in Mulan triumphed. Daigler was also nominated for the television limited series Mrs. America.

Television winners included Westworld and The Queen’s Gambit. The Queen’s Gambit has yet to lose a single guild it’s been nominated for.

Among the presenters this evening were Amanda Seyfried, Rose Byrne, Andra Day, Emerald Fennell, Regina King, Carey Mulligan and Leslie Odom Jr.

During the virtual ceremony, producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers jointly received the Distinguished Collaborator Award for their “unwavering support” of costume design and designers.

“From the record-breaking series, Grey’s Anatomy to the latest binge-worthy series, Bridgerton, Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers have been longtime partners of the Costume Designers Guild,” said Salvador Perez, President of the Costume Designers Guild. “Throughout the years, the two have created cultural-defining TV moments with support from fellow collaborators and costume designers. We can think of no other duo more deserving of this award.”

The award was presented to Rhimes and Beers by Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton). Past recipients have included Adam McKay, Ryan Murphy, Meryl Streep, Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo Del Toro, Lorne Michaels, Helen Mirren, Judd Apatow, Clint Eastwood, Rob Marshall and James Burrows.
