Disney has been making a mint going back to the well of some of its most famous properties, most recently with the live action version of Beauty and the Beast which earned over $500M domestically and was nominated for two Oscars this year.
Coming this Christmas is Mary Poppins Returns and it looks like a winner. This sequel features a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks (Emily Mortimer and Ben Wishaw) in Depression-era London. After the siblings suffer a personal loss, Mary Poppins returns (this time played by Emily Blunt) and with the aid of her friend Jack (Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda), she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep, Oscar winner Colin Firth, two-time Oscar nominee Julie Walters, Tony winning legend Angela Lansbury and original Mary Poppins co-star Dick Van Dyke.
But wait, there’s more. The film, and the trailer below, is scored by 5-time Oscar nominee Marc Shaiman and includes new songs (you can lock down those Oscar nominations now), adapted by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee (Life of Pi, Finding Neverland) from the novel by P.L. Travers, shot by Oscar winner Dion Beebe (Chicago), features costumes from three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell (Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator, Young Victoria) and directed by Oscar nominee Rob Marshall (Chicago).
Word is that Disney plans on mounting a huge Oscar campaign for the film. The original 1964 film earned 13 Oscar nominations, winning five, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews. That’s a lot to live up to but word of mouth is really strong and we like what we’ve seen so far.
