Previously announced opening night films are Green Book and A Private War. ROMA is the festival’s Centerpiece film as a part of the ¡Viva el Cine! initiative, Academy Award-nominated actress Carey Mulligan and actor-turned-director Paul Dano will be given a Spotlight featuring their film Wildlife and Beautiful Boy will be a Special Presentation with Timothée Chalamet, Amy Ryan and director Felix von Groeningen in attendance.
Barry Jenkins returns to Mill Valley after his Oscar-winning Moonlight with his new film, If Beale Street Could Talk, as the festival’s closing night film with Academy Award winner in the house.
Other film highlights include The Favourite from Academy Award nominee Yorgos Lanthimos, Widows from Academy Award winner Steve McQueen, Cannes Palme winner Shoplifters from Hirokazu Kore-eda and Cannes Jury Prize winner Capharnaüm from Nadine Labaki.
Mind the Gap, the gender initiative, continues this with Stacy L. Smith receiving the Leadership Award and the Mind the Gap Summit featuring Smith, Chaz Ebert and more.
The new Focus Series highlights the films of this year’s festival featuring diverse stories on queer representation, what it means to be black in the contemporary world, young adult films about the challenges of post-adolescence and animated films from around the globe.
More than just film, the Mill Valley Film Festival also features a rich lineup of music, this year featuring Jarvis Cocker, Holly Near, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and more, all at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley.
The 41st Mill Valley Film Festival runs October 4-14.
