Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Nominations: Baby, Baby, Baby

The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) are always the last guild to reveal nominations and they can often give us the final clues to those sound categories as we edit our Oscar predictions in the 11th hour.

The two big categories, Dialogue/ADR and Effects/Foley are the ones to pay attention to when it comes to Oscar and this year five films hit both: Baby Driver, Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk, The Shape of Water and War for the Planet of the Apes. Will this be our Sound Editing Oscar top 5? It very well could be with high profile misses like Wonder Woman and Get Out. It bodes well that Best Picture frontrunner Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was able to score here, checking off yet another guild. Less surprising is the speech-heavy Darkest Hour.

Last year Sully earned a nomination in the Dialogue/ADR category on its way to a Sound Editing Oscar nomination. On the flip side, La La Land did not show up here and was nominated anyway as a part of its 14-nomination sweep.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors guild will announce their winners in a ceremony in Los Angeles on February 18th.
