SUPER LTD, the boutique division and incubator from NEON, announced today that they have acquired North American rights to master director Gianfranco Rosi’s Notturno, which has enjoyed a remarkable festival run, the only documentary to have played at Venice, Telluride, Toronto, New York film festivals, winning three awards in Venice including the Cinema for UNICEF award. The film has been nominated for a Critics’ Choice Documentary Award and was recently announced as Italy’s official submission for this year’s Academy Awards.

Notturno is produced by Stemal Entertainment and 21uno Film with Rai Cinema, with Istituto Luce – Cinecittà, with the contribution of DG Cinema e Audiovosivo MIBACT and with the support of  Eurimages in coproduction with Les Films d’Ici with Arte France Cinéma, and with No Nation Films and Mizzi Stock Entertainment in association with  Doha Film Institute with the support of Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg.

Rosi’s highly acclaimed documentary was shot over three years along the rattled borders of Iraq, Kurdistan, Syria, and Lebanon in the director’s visually stunning, but also empathetic – style. The impressionistic film captures people who have long been contending with the ravages of war and terror, most recently inflicted by ISIS.

Mason Speta negotiated the deal for SUPER LTD with Submarine Entertainment on behalf of the filmmakers.  The Match Factory is handling international rights.

Rosi is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working in cinema today. He is the only documentarian to have won two of the highest awards of the world’s three major film festivals – Cannes, Venice, Berlin. His recent work ranges from migration-themed Fire at Sea, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award and won the 2016 Berlin Golden Bear and European Film Award, to Sacro GRA, winner of the 2013 Venice Golden Lion.

SUPER LTD recently made history with Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov’s award-winning and record-breaking Honeyland, which was the first non-fiction feature to land Academy Award nominations for Best Documentary and Best International Feature Film in the same year.
