New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) Announces 2027 Gala Awards Date
The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) announced today that it will hold its annual Gala Awards dinner on Tuesday, January 5, 2027 at TAO Downtown. David Rooney, chief film critic at The Hollywood Reporter, will serve as the 2026 Chair of the NYFCC and Stephen Garrett will continue as the group’s General Manager.
This past year’s awards ceremony, also held at TAO Downtown, was another resounding success. Memorable moments from the evening included Ethan Hawke presenting Best Actress to Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Ben Stiller presenting Best Supporting Actor to Benicio del Toro for One Battle After Another, Tracy Letts presenting Best International Film to Kleber Mendonça Filho for The Secret Agent, Gaby Hoffmann presenting Best Supporting Actress to Amy Madigan for Weapons, Lupita Nyong’o presenting Best Actor to Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent, Ken Jeong presenting Best Animated Film to Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans for KPop Demon Hunters, Isaac Mizrahi presenting Best Screenplay to Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, and Chase Infiniti presenting Best Film to Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another. A date for the NYFCC’s 2026 film awards announcement has not been revealed.
“The film industry, especially in the U.S., has arguably never faced greater challenges — from the rise of streaming to the threat of AI, from the lingering after-effects of labor strikes and a global pandemic to the squeeze on competition likely to result from corporate M&A,” said NYFCC Chair David Rooney. “But the international creative community has shown remarkable resilience time and again. As seen by several standouts that have already emerged out of Sundance and Berlin this year, that shadow over the industry’s health is not going to crush filmmaking excellence. We’re confident that the NYFCC will be back at TAO Downtown next January with a fresh crop of great movies and performances worth celebrating.”
The Circle will also continue working with programmers at The Paris Theater for the “NYFCC @ The Paris” series, in which members of the Circle present favorite titles, oftentimes with filmmaker conversations afterward. Recent screenings include Pretty Poison, which was introduced by New York Film Critics Circle member Richard Brody.
The NYFCC will also continue giving out its student awards, which recognize graduate and undergraduate students pursuing film criticism and journalism from schools in the surrounding New York metropolitan area. NYFCC member Keith Uhlich will continue spearheading this effort, which includes financial support as well as two invites to the dinner.
Founded in 1935, the New York Film Critics Circle is the oldest critics group in the country, and among the most prestigious. The NYFCC’s membership includes critics from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and the web’s most respected online publications.
He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Critics Choice Association (CCA), San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle (SFBAFCC) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
