94 original songs and 149 original scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th Academy Awards, including three songs from Barbie, two from 14-time nominee Diane Warren with a handful of scores either deemed ineligible or not submitted, including those for Asteroid City, Wonka and The Little Mermaid.

Thomas Newman, 15-time Oscar nominee without a win, will potentially have two more chances with the score for and original song “Steal the Show” from Pixar’s Elemental. While The Little Mermaid‘s score was found ineligible, the live-action remake has three new songs that are on the list, “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt,” and “Uncharted Waters.” Another movie musical, The Color Purple, also has two new songs submitted, “Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower.”

This week, the Golden Globes nominated “Dance the Night,” “I’m Just Ken,” “What Was I Made For” from Barbie, “Road to Freedom” from Rustin, “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie and “Addicted to Romance” from She Came to Me and for Original Score they nominated The Boy and the Heron, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Zone of Interest. Over at Critics Choice, the nominated scores are Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Society of the Snow and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. All are Oscar-eligible.

Voting for the Oscar shortlists in both song and score – as well eight other categories – began today and will continue through 5pm PT on Monday. The Oscar shortlists will be revealed on December 21. From those shortlists Academy voters will decide the nominees between January 11-16, 2024 with Oscar nominations revealed on January 23.
