Oscars: Academy Invites 398 New Members, Including Ke Huy Quan, Dolly De Leon, Keke Palmer, WB CEO David Zaslav

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has selected 398 people across all fields and branches of film and filmmaking as new members of the Academy, including several brand new Oscar winners from this year like Supporting Actor winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and his directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (who were invited to both the directing and writing branch but must choose one), Cinematography winner James Friend (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Animated Short Film winner Charlie Mackesy (The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse).

Multiple Oscar-nominated writer/directors received dual invites including Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lukas Dhont (Close), Colm Bairéad (The Quiet Girl) and Santiago Mitre (Argentina, 1985). Charlotte Wells, whose feature debut Aftersun earned star Paul Mescal an Oscar nomination and an invite to the Academy, was invited to join the writers’ branch.

Several new Oscar nominees also made the invite cut, including Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Austin Butler (Elvis) in a class that is 40% women and 34% from underrepresented ethic/racial communities. A full 52% of this year’s invitees come from 51 countries or territories outside the U.S. with Zar Amir-Ebrahimi (Holy Spider), Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others), Park Hae-il (Decision to Leave) and NT Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan from RRR among them.

Digging deeper into the stats and makeup of the Academy, four branches invited more women than men (Casting Directors, Costume Designers, Makeup and Hairstylists, and Marketing and Public Relations), two branches invited the majority of their candidates from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities (Actors and Directors) and 12 branches invited from countries or territories outside of the U.S. (Casting Directors, Cinematographers, Costume Designers, Directors, Documentary, Makeup and Hairstylists, Music, Producers, Production Designers, Short Film and Feature Animation, Sound, and Writers).

With the addition of the 2023 class, 34% of Academy members identify as women, 18% are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities and 20% are from countries or territories outside of the U.S.

The newest branch of the Academy, Production and Technology, invited 16 members. Last week, Wendy Alysworth was chosen to head that branch, among other board of governors decisions.

“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide.”

Among the more likely controversial choices was heavily criticized Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav, who took over the studio as a part of the Discovery/WarnerMedia merge and has since been the face of responsibility of massive cuts, the removing of HBO and WB properties from their own platforms, the rebranding of HBO Max to Max, canceling several projects and doubling down on Discovery, DC content and reality content in the face of the ongoing writer’s strike and impending actor’s strike, all while collecting $39 million in payment packages last year and nearly $500 million since 2018.

If all of this year’s invitees (up one from last year) were to accept, it would bring Academy membership up to 10,187 (from 10,665 last year) with 9,375 eligible to vote (a significant decrease from 9,665 last year) as a result of deaths, retirements and some members moving to non-voter emeritus status.

This year (and next) bring a sea of change to the Academy as their Aperture Initiative goes into effect this season, which requires all Best Picture nominees to qualify under a set of requirements as well as changes to original song and original score, and to campaigning as a result of the Andrea Riseborough Best Actress drama last season. For the 2024 release year season, the Academy put forth stronger requirements for longer theatrical release windows in order to qualify for Best Picture.

Here is the complete list of Academy invitees for 2023.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
