The Academy continues with its pledge to increase diversity amongst its voting ranks, boosting female and non-white membership for the fourth year in a row
The Academy has invited 842 new members to the 2019 class of voters. In 2018, the Academy invited 928 new members (the largest add ever), 774 in 2017, 683 in 2016 and 322 in 2015.
The 2019 class is 50% women, 29% people of color, and represents 59 countries. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2019. Six individuals (noted by an asterisk) have been invited to join the Academy by multiple branches. These individuals must select one branch upon accepting membership.
Joining Winston Duke, Lady Gaga, Jon M. Chu and Jennifer Kent (if they choose to accept), the Academy welcomed actors Toms Holland and Hollander, actress Gemma Chan, directors Nisha Ganatra and Phil Lord, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Goransson, Oscar-winning singer Annie Lennox and writers Desiree Akhavan and Gillian Flynn.
Some notable omissions from last season’s Oscar nominees in the new membership list include first-time actress Yalitza Aparicio (Best Actress for Roma), although her co-star Marina de Tavira (a Supporting Actress nominee) did. Also curiously missing (or maybe not) is two-time Oscar winner Nick Vallelonga. Vallelonga won Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture for Green Book but was mired in controversy soon after the film’s Golden Globe win for Best Picture when past tweets were discovered of Vallelonga supporting a pre-president Trump and his assertion of seeing Muslims in New Jersey applauding the fall of the twin towers on 9/11.
The Academy is coming of from its first hostless Oscars ceremony in three decades with an uptick in viewership; 29.6 million people tuned in to watch Green Book win Best Picture, up from the telecast’s all-time low of 26.5 million the previous year (the second year in a row hosted by Jimmy Kimmel). Next year, the Oscars will be held two weeks earlier, February 9th, in an effort to condense the awards season but return to the end of the month for 2021 and 2022. The Academy has also made some changes for some of its categories that will go into effect in the next season. The Foreign Language Film category will now be called International Feature Film and the Makeup & Hairstyling category has finally been upped from three to five nominees.
