Our Gold Rush Gang predicts the PGA nominees

We are in the lull of the season, with most people either still digesting Christmas dinner or preparing their firecrackers for New Years Eve (except the good people of Central Ohio, it seems). But fear not, a week of important nominations is coming up, as the guilds begin to roll out their nominees. The PGA, WGA, and DGA all announce their nominations in the first week of January, and today we look ahead to what out own Gold Rush Gang predicts for the first of these three organizations, the Producers Guild of America, which unveils their list in Thursday.

To be fair, there is little to discuss, as we see quite a bit of consensus in these picks. All members predict the following set of films: 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, and The Wolf Of Wall Street. The faith in eight of these films was already established, but Dallas Buyers Club seems to gain believers by the day. Will it continue to strengthen now that the guilds are going to weigh in? That is probably the most interesting story to follow in the coming two weeks leading up to nomination morning, in addition to seeing how the chips fall for the four films that one would think to some extent need the ‘passion vote’ to make it in (Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Nebraska).

Only three other films get votes here, the most going to Lee Daniels’ The Butler (a typical producers film, plus half the guild has a production credit on that film), with Fruitvale Station and Saving Mr. Banks both getting a lone vote. The latter continues to get no vote of confidence from AwardsWatch, and the coming week will prove if that feeling is substantiated.

If you’re missing the votes of some people: hey, some of us need Christmas vacations too! Predicting the Oscars is hard work, you know.
