PGA Awards: ‘Green Book’ wins Producers Guild Top Prize

The 30th Producers Guild of America has chosen Peter Farrelly’s 1960s road comedy Green Book as the best produced film of 2018. Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly and Nick Vallelonga share the win, which bolsters the film’s chances at Oscar’s Best Picture as it beat heavy competition from BlacKkKlansman, ROMA and A Star Is Born.

The PGA is comprised of about 8200 members and has aligned with the Best Picture Oscar 20 times in 29 years, including The Shape of Water last year.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the Animated Feature prize, adding to its Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice wins last week.

The Mr. Rogers doc Won’t You Be My Neighbor? won Documentary Feature, continuing its streak of wins that includes two dozens critics’ prizes.

Kevin Feige, who is nominated tonight for Black Panther, will also receive the David O. Selznick Award from Iron Man and Avengers star Robert Downey Jr. “I don’t spend a lot of time looking backwards. Making movies is all I ever wanted to do,” said Feige.

Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will receive the Norman Lear Award for Television. In accepting her award Palladino said, “I hope I took away from Mr. Lear the ability to take care of my group.”

Kenya Barris (black-ish) will receive the Visionary Award from television icon (and PGA award namesake) Norman Lear.

Jane Fonda receives the Stanley Kramer Award. In accepting her award she spoke about women, saying “It’s not that we’re better. It’s just that we don’t have our masculinity to prove.”

Toby Emmerich (IT, Central Intelligence, We’re the Millers) receives the PGA Milestone Award. He thanked presenter Bradley Cooper saying, “I’m so proud of having been your wingman on your maiden voyage.”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel wins the award for Episodic Television: Comedy for the second year in a row, joining Sex and the City, 30 Rock, and Modern Family as the only comedies to win in consecutive years. The Americans won Episodic Television: Drama.

Fahrenheit 451 won the PGA’s inaugural award for Streamed or Televised Motion Picture while The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story continued its awards run. RuPaul’s Drag Race wins the Game & Competition award, breaking the 5-year streak of The Voice. RPDR also won the Emmy for the first time last September, also dethroning the long-standing singing show. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won Live Entertainment & Talk Television for the fourth year in a row, more than all shows in its category combined.
