Producers Guild:’Crazy Rich Asians,’ ‘Vice,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in; ‘Beale Street’ out

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) revealed their nominations for the best produced films of 2018 and while most of them were easy to predict, a few shocking surprises also manifested.

All five Screen Actors Guild Outstanding Cast nominees made the cut: Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians and A Star Is Born.

The mega-hit A Quiet Place earned a spot and the critically maligned Vice made the cut over the critically lauded If Beale Street Could Talk (both from Annapurna Pictures). This makes the path for Beale Street, which was also snubbed by SAG, a very difficult one. Same goes for Mary Poppins Returns, Eighth Grade and First Man. But, it solidifies the spots for those five SAG cast nominees.

The PGA winner for Motion Pictures last year matched the Best Picture Oscar winner The Shape of Water but split in the two years prior. Since the PGA and Best Picture Oscar expansion the two have aligned more than not – seven times out of nine times (including the 2013 tie between 12 Years a Slave and Gravity). With the exception of the group’s award for 1995 film (only a winner was announced – Apollo 13 – no nominees), no film has ever won the Best Picture Oscar without at least a PGA nomination first.

Last year, the PGA had 11 nominees with four of their choices: The Big Sick, I, Tonya, Molly’s Game and Wonder Woman not making the Best Picture cut. The Big Sick also was nominated for the SAG Cast award but ended up with just an Original Screenplay nomination at the Oscars.

Some felt this was a hurdle for Netflix to get past in ROMA‘s Best Picture hopes and it passed. It becomes the first nomination here for the streamer.

In television, The Americans, Better Call Saul, Atlanta, GLOW and Escape at Dannemora found nominations. Emmy winners The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, RuPaul’s Drag Race did as well.

Next week we’ll have Writers Guild and Directors Guild nominations on the 7th and 8th, respectively.

The Producers Guild of America awards will be held on January 19th.
