While Universal is poised to possibly win Best Picture at the Oscars with 1917 this weekend, they’re also likely going to win Worst Picture at the Golden Raspberry with the year’s most extravagant jellicle disaster in Cats. A date for the Razzies (which they are affectionately known as), which is usually the night before the Oscars, has not been set this year.
The splashy, big screen adaptation of one of the most popular Broadway musicals in history was a box office and critical disaster, and earned nods for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Francesca Hayward), Worst Supporting Actress (both Judi Dench and Rebel Wilson), Worst Supporting Actor (James Corden), Worst Screen Combo (for “Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairball” plus Jason Derulo and “his CGI-neutered bulge” – the Razzies really love their definers), Worst Director (Tom Hooper) and Worst Screenplay for a total of 9 nominations.
Rambo: Last Blood and A Madea Family Funeral joined Cats as Worst Picture nominees and received eight nominations each at this year’s Razzies. The Haunting of Sharon Tate and the Fred Durst-directed John Travolta flick The Fanatic round out Worst Picture.
“Due to the Oscar’s accelerated 2020 calendar which has stressed out the entire industry and is about to ruin the holidays for everyone, we here at the upper echelons of the Razzie Organization have decided to avoid anxiety and set our own schedule this year,” organizers said.
Despite the cheeky nature of the Golden Raspberry Awards, they do have one ‘good’ category in the form of the ‘Razzie Redeemer Award, which finds former Razzies winners having a critically acclaimed year. This year’s nominees include Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems), Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) and Eddie Murphy (Dolemite Is My Name).
