The San Diego Film Critics Society has chosen Leave No Trace as its Best Picture for 2018, its director Debra Granik as Best Director and Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie for Breakout Artist. This was Granik’s second win after earning accolades from Los Angeles this weekend and McKenzie’s second as well after the National Board of Review.
Green Book and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs came in with the most nominations, 9 and 7, respectively but wound up with slim to none to take home today. Buster Scruggs managed a single win in Best Cinematography, which it shared with The Rider. Green Book, the nomination leader, won zero but was the runner-up in no less than four races including Best Picture.
Other first wins of the season included Glenn Close in Best Actress for The Wife and Nicole Kidman in Best Supporting Actress for Boy Erased.
The action-comedy Game Night made an impact, winning Best Editing and Best Ensemble.
