The International Press Academy (IPA) announces its nominations for the 21st Annual Satellite™ Awards and for the first time the IPA is awarding a separate independent film and major studio film as Best Picture. Each year, the IPA celebrates nominees from domestic and international submissions for 37 categories: 19 in Motion Pictures, 12 in Television, 2 in Blu-ray DVDs and 4 in Video Games.

La La Land led the way with 13 mentions, including Motion Picture, Director (Damien Chazelle), Actress (Emma Stone) and Actor (Ryan Gosling).

In total, the IPA nominated 12 films in its Motion Picture category that also included Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Lion, Jackie, Hacksaw Ridge, Loving, Hell or High Water, Nocturnal Animals, Captain Fantastic, Hidden Figures, and Fences. Despite that extra-large list, there was no room for Amy Adams other, more high-profile film this year, Arrival. In fact, the film woke up with 0 nominations, ironically fitting considering the style of the alien language in the film. Adams is nominated, however, for Nocturnal Animals. For the record, the last film to be completely snubbed by the IPA and hit Best Picture at the Oscars anyway was 2012’s Django Unchained, which went on to win two Academy Awards.

The lead acting categories are packed with eight nominees apiece, giving us very little in the way of beginning to narrow down contenders to what will eventually be Oscar’s final five. All of the top contenders are here, save Adams in Arrival as mentioned above. One of the few outliers, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, received a nomination for Snowden.

Curiously missing, or maybe not so when you consider the group’s history, are three high-profile year-end films; Live by Night, Patriots Day and Silence. Screenings for those film only just began over the Thanksgiving holiday and, like the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards group, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, likely didn’t have time to screen it or it wasn’t screened for them. Including those films today would have raised an eyebrow or two since the IPA has previously been accused of nominating films the group had not yet seen (The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013 was one).

Hacksaw Ridge, from Mel Gibson, got 9 nominations this morning including Motion Picture, Director, and Actor (Andrew Garfield). Hidden Figures, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea all received 7 apiece. Jackie and Lion each received 5 nominations. Awards pariah The Birth of a Nation received just a single mention, in Film Editing.

The special achievement awards include; The Mary Pickford Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to the Entertainment Industry goes this year to Edward James Olmos, The Nikola Tesla Award for visionary achievements in filmmaking technology goes to John Toll, The Auteur Award for creative vision and unique artistry made on audiences and fellow artists alike goes to Tom Ford and the Humanitarian Award recipient is actor/activist Patrick Stewart. The Best First Feature Award goes to Russudan Glurjidze for House of Others.

The Best Ensemble for Motion Pictures goes to Hidden Figures and the Best Ensemble for Television goes to Outlander.
