The actors have spoken and American Hustle was chosen for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture, besting 12 Years a Slave. It was the film’s only win of the night, with Jennifer Lawrence losing Female Actor in a Supporting Role to newcomer Lupita Nyong’o from 12 Years a Slave. The two actresses have been trading off wins in the last week (Lawrence taking the Globe, Nyong’o winning BFCA) and with just BAFTA left before the Oscars it’s proving to be a real race in this category. Jared Leto picked up another win in supporting for his role as a transgender AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club and he was joined by co-star Matthew McConaughey, who won in lead. His speech tonight seemed to come from either bit of chemical-induced philosophical euphoria, going on tangents from Neptune to sailing across the Atlantic. Lead Actress winner Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, being told to wrap up because time was running short, cracked wise at McConaughey’s expense and continued a touching and funny speech.
On the TV side, Breaking Bad snagged wins for Drama Lead Actor Bryan Cranston and for the show’s Ensemble in a Drama Series. Maggie Smith won her first individual SAG for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Downton Abbey. Modern Family won yet another Ensemble in a Comedy Series award and also a Comedy Lead Actor win Ty Burrell (breaking 30 Rock‘s Alec Baldwin’s strangehold on this category) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus won for Lead Actress for Veep.
Helen Mirren picked up the TV Movie/Miniseries Actress award for Phil Spector and Michael Douglas added another to his awards coffer for Behind the Candelabra.
The high point of the evening was Rita Moreno’s hilarious speech (F-bomb!) accepting her Lifetime Achievement Award. Her speech was funny, beautiful, humble and even came with a song and dance. Moreno for all the speeches this awards season, please?
