As always, the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations provided us with some juicy head-scratching fodder.
Right off the top, in the Cast in a Motion Picture category, we saw two of the biggest surprises: Oscar Best Picture frontrunner La La Land did not score a nomination. History has been very kind to the BP frontrunner here. So much so that we haven’t seen the eventual Oscar winner miss since the inception of this award back in 1995 when Braveheart wasn’t nominated but still went on to win the Academy Award. This could be a serious chink in the armor of what has been a pretty clear path for the musical. It already has to overcome that no film released in December has won Best Picture since 2004’s Million Dollar Baby. The film’s stars, however, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling did earn nominations.
Two other surprises were the omission of Hell or High Water and the inclusion of Captain Fantastic. In a way, they cancel each other out in the sense that for the last seven years this award has included a film that was released outside of the crunch of awards season (pre-August). It was heavily predicted that that film would be Hell or High Water as it has over-performed so far this season with critics. But, Captain Fantastic fits that bill as well and the film’s only known star, Viggo Mortensen, also earned a nomination.
Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) managed to squeeze out Tom Hanks (Sully) once again, just as he did at the Golden Globe nominations on Monday. His film also earned a Stunt nomination. Speaking of Golden Globes, Female Actor in a Supporting Role lined up with the Globes exactly. We might want to consider that category almost locked in.
Other surprises included Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train in the Female Actor in a Leading Role category. While not quite Sarah Silverman left field shocker, Blunt had absolutely zero traction going into these nominations, even missing out on a Globe mention (the love her). Her nomination comes at the expense of the already shaky Annette Bening in 20th Century Women, which came up empty-handed today.
In all, Manchester by the Sea was the nomination leader today with four nods in the five top categories. Moonlight and Fences were next with three apiece. Hidden Figures, Florence Foster Jenkins, Captain Fantastic, Lion and Hacksaw Ridge came in with two each. One unfortunate oversight was Alex Hibbert, a crucial element in the triptych of Moonlight‘s Little/Chiron/Black, missing out on a Cast nomination. His older counterparts, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes, are nominated with the cast.
Mahershala Ali stands alone as a triple nominee today. He earned an individual nomination for supporting actor plus two cast mentions – Hidden Figures and Moonlight. Musical artist and acting newcomer Janelle Monáe also appears in both Hidden Figures and Moonlight and earns two herself.
