Moonlight and La La Land have earned 10 nominations apiece from theSeattle Film Critics Society, tying for the most of any film on their list. Arrival was right behind with 9 and Manchester by the Sea has seven although, curiously, missed out on Best Director. The Witch made a huge dent in today’s nominations with seven as well, including Best Picture and Best Director for Robert Eggers, his first film.
Some surprise nominations came in the form of the first mention anywhere for Kyle Chandler in Manchester by the Sea. He is joined by his co-star Lucas Hedges in Supporting Actor. Also in that category was John Goodman in 10 Cloverfield Lane (who also got a Best Villain mention). Kate McKinnon earned a Supporting Actress nomination for Ghostbusters and Logan Lerman was nominated for Best Actor (Indignation).
Ava DuVernay’s 13TH was not only nominated for Best Documentary but also for Best Picture. Two foreign language films made the cut for Best Picture; The Handmaiden and Elle (which also got Director and Actress mentions). Both were also nominated for Foreign Language Film and The Handmaiden made a strong showing in the tech categories.
Winners will be announced Thursday, January 5th, 2017.
