The nominations from the Society of Composers and Lyricists were announced on Monday and the duo of Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross led the field with three mentions in two categories. They were nominated together for their original score of Mank in the Studio Film category as well as original song for visual media, “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” also from Mank. Their third nomination was also in original score (Studio Film) for Soul and shared with Jon Batiste, who composed the jazz pieces in the film.

Perennial nominee Diane Warren is nominated but not for the song and film you’d think. She’s nominated for her song “Free,” from the Disney+ film The One and Only Ivan and not “Io Sì (Seen),” from the Sophia Loren drama The Life Ahead from Netflix, where her Oscar chances are more likely.

In the category of Outstanding Original Score for an Independent Film the nominees included Emile Mosseri for Minari and Tamar-kali for Shirley.

Terence Blanchard, who is nominated for studio-film score for Da 5 Bloods, along with the film’s director Spike Lee, are the recipients of the Spirit of Collaboration Award, given annually to a composer-director duo “for an enduring and distinguished creative partnership.”

Here is the full list of nominations. Winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony on March 2 and hosted by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino (Up).
