The 3rd Society of Composers and Lyricists awards came with several surprises in both the film and television categories as Germaine Franco’s score for the animated Encanto bested the likes of Hans Zimmer’s Dune and Jonny Greenwood’s The Power of the Dog for outstanding original score for a studio film.
Daniel Hart’s The Green Knight triumphed Jonny Greenwood’s Spencer and Alberto Iglesias’ Oscar-nominated score for Parallel Mothers to win for independent film.
For original songs, “Just Look Up” from Don’t Look Up won the comedy category while the drama or documentary category went to Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas for “No Time to Die” from No Time to Die. The song, now over two years old due to delays in the release of the film, has won a Grammy and a Golden Globe and is the Oscar frontrunner.
The White Lotus, from composer Cristobel Tapia de Veer, topped the scores from Squid Game, Loki, WandaVision and Succession, a single category that covers comedy, drama and limited series.
Composer Carter Burwell and filmmakers Joel Coen & Ethan Coen received the Spirit of Collaboration Award for their 17-film team-up along with a musical tribute performance that’s set to feature guest performances from Barlow & Bear, Judith Hill, Cory Pesaturo and the Carter Burwell Ensemble.
Here is the full list of winners from the Society of Composers and Lyricists. The live, in-person ceremony was hosted by Aloe Blacc at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
