The Television Critics Association (TCA) has announced its nominations for the best in TV for the 2017-2018 season and the BBC American breakout hit Killing Eve slayed the competition with a field-best five nominations including Program of the Year and two Individual Achievement in Drama mentions for both Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer.
The final season of FX’s The Americans also performed strong, as the show does with the TCA, with four nominations and, like Killing Eve, including Program of the Year and two Individual Achievement in Drama nominations for stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.
Last year’s winner for Program of the Year and Drama of the Year – Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale – is nominated in both categories once again.
In Comedy, FX’s Atlanta and HBO’s Barry were top performers. Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel landed nominations in New Program, Comedy of the Year and Individual Achievement in Comedy (for Rachel Brosnahan) but curiously missed out on Program of the Year. The only comedies to break into the top category were Atlanta (last year’s Comedy winner) and NBC’s The Good Place, which was also mentioned in Comedy of the Year and Individual Achievement in Comedy for Ted Danson.
This Is Us continued to perform strongly with the critics, earning Drama of the Year and Program of the Year nominations. The Good Fight from CBS All-Access was a surprise nominee today in Drama and Showtime’s Twin Peaks: The Return was surprisingly only nominated in Movie/Miniseries of the Year and not for Kyle MacLachlan’s performance. The sole mention in Individual Achievement in Drama for a movie or miniseries was Darren Criss for FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
Overall, FX leads networks with 10 TCA awards nominations, followed closely by Netflix (9) and NBC (7). BBC America and HBO both earned six nominations apiece; PBS/PBS Kids with four; Hulu, Amazon, and CBS/CBS All Access with three; Starz, Showtime, and Disney Channel/Disney Junior with two; and TBS, VH1, Lifetime, MSNBC, CNN, and the CW each scored one.
The winners of the 34th Annual TCA Awards will be announced on August 4th in a ceremony hosted by Robin Thede, host of BET late-night series The Rundown with Robin Thede.
