The Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) announced the winners of its inaugural television awards tonight, where Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso scored wins for Best Streaming Series, Comedy plus three acting prizes for Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein among its field best 8 nominations.
The awards are the first of its kind to separate streaming and broadcast network categories, giving a wide berth to celebrate more shows and more performances in an effort to capture how we watched television in 2020 and the first half of 2021. As with the Television Academy’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the HCA TV Awards number of nominations in each category is based on total submissions.
The ceremony was originally slated to be an in-person outdoor event at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, CA this Sunday with on-site testing and proof of vaccination for all attendees, but due to rising Coronavirus cases across the United States and for the safety of everyone scheduled to attend, the organization has made the tough decision to make the ceremony virtual.
“Our team was very excited to celebrate all of our winners in person, but due to Covid cases still rising, we felt it was in everyone’s best interest to move the event virtually to ensure the safety of all of our attendees and staff,” said HCA Chairman Scott Menzel. “We are hopeful to be back to an in-person ceremony for our film awards in 2022.”
In the broadcast and cable categories, NBC’s New Amsterdam and Freeform’s Cruel Summer took the series prizes while the pair of Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez won the Broadcast or Cable Series, Drama lead acting awards for Pose. In streaming, another duo won the lead prizes: Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin for The Crown. Gillian Anderson also picked up a win for The Crown in supporting.
WandaVision from Disney+ won two awards, for Best Streaming Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Live-Action Television Movie and Kathryn Hahn for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Television Movie. HBO’s Mare of Easttown named Best Broadcast Network or Cable Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Live-Action Television Movie and star Evan Peters won Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Television Movie. In the leading categories, Colman Domingo (Euphoria Two-Part Special) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) were the winners.
Additionally, the organization will be celebrating Bo Burnham, Marta Kauffman, Tom Ellis, Cobra Kai, New Amsterdam, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist with honorary awards at the HCA TV Awards.
The HCA also bestowed Honorary Awards to each of the recipients with the below awards:
- Bo Burnham (Inside) was presented with the Virtuoso Award
- Marta Kauffman (Friends creator) was presented with the TV Icon Award
- Tom Ellis (Lucifer) was presented with the Pop Icon Award
- Cobra Kai was presented with the Legacy Award
- New Amsterdam was presented with the Impact Award
- Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist was presented with the “Spotlight Award
“All of the nominees that we celebrated and honored tonight are amongst some of the best in television history,” notes HCA Chairman Scott Menzel. “While these past 17 months have been incredibly difficult for many of us, television has once again become our best friend. Series like Ted Lasso, Hacks, and Young Rock provided us with a sense of joy and happiness during these troubled times. Dramatic series such as New Amsterdam, Lovecraft Country, and Pose were as entertaining as they were educational. These are only a few of the shows that were nominated, but it is so inspiring to see all of these passionate stories being told from diverse storytellers that aren’t afraid to touch upon timely issues including racism, COVID-19, and LGBTIQ rights.
