The 25th Art Directors Guild Awards (ADG, IATSE Local 800), under the theme “Celebrating Resilience,” were held tonight in a reimagined virtual show due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The awards, recognizing 25 years of resilience and encompassing over 2,900 members, celebrated outstanding production design theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos in 12 categories including. The show was hosted by JB Smoove.
Netflix was the top winner with feature film awards for Mank in Period, Da 5 Bloods in Contemporary and television awards for Ozark in one-hour series and The Queen’s Gambit in Limited Series. Tenet won the fantasy category for feature film and Soul won for animated. Elsewhere in television, Saturday Night Live, The Mandalorian, Will & Grace and What We Do In the Shadows were winners.
Presenters included Jordi Molla (Jack Ryan), Nicco Annan (P-Valley); entrepreneur, supermodel and Emmy-winning television producer and personality Tyra Banks; Oscar-nominated actress Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Aasif Mandvi (Evil); Emmy-nominated actress Jenna Elfman (Fear the Walking Dead, Dharma and Greg) and Brian Tee (Chicago Med), among others.
Ryan Murphy, award-winning television producer, writer and director, will receive the esteemed Cinematic Imagery Award, honoring his prestigious spectrum of extraordinary productions reflecting the highest quality of production design, presented by Matt Bomer, star of many of Murphy’s shows including Boys in the Band.
Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to Emmy-winning Production Designer Stuart Wurtzel (AD), Set Designer Martha Johnston (SDMM), Concept Artist John Eaves (IMA), and Scenic Artist Patrick DeGreve (STG) for their outstanding legacies and contributions to their crafts.
