Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, starring Emmy Award nominee Andrew Scott, Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal, Emmy Award winner Claire Foy and BAFTA Award winner Jamie Bell.
Loosely adapted from Taichi Yamada’s Japan-set 1987 novel, Haigh switches up gender, location and sexualities for his most ambitious film to date – a love story, a ghost story and a story of letting go.
One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor Harry (Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and find himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents (Foy and Bell), appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.
“Adapting the book was a long and sometimes painful process,” said Haigh. “I wanted to pick away at my own past as Adam does in the film. I was interested in exploring the complexities of both familial and romantic love, but also the distinct experience of a specific generation of gay people growing up in the 80s. I wanted to move away from the traditional ghost story of the novel and find something more psychological, almost metaphysical.”
All of Us Strangers had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month where critics called it “a sublime masterpiece” and “one of the year’s best films.” It currently sits at a 98 on Metacritic and 94 on Rotten Tomatoes. Its next sweep of festivals includes NewFest, New York Film Festival, Chicago International Film, BFI London Film Festival and more before its official theatrical release on December 22.
