‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ ‘Abbott Elementary’ lead 80th Golden Globe nominations; women directors snubbed

The nominations for the 80th Golden Globe Awards in motion pictures and television were announced early Monday morning where Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin led the film nominations with 8, the most of any film since 2003’s Cold Mountain.

Everything Everywhere All At Once was next with six, including Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director (The Daniels), Screenplay and three acting nominations (Michelle Yeah, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Babylon and The Fabelmans were next with five apiece.

The morning didn’t come without some surprising inclusions and snubs; Danielle Deadwyler didn’t make the drama actress cut for Till, while Ana de Armas did in the critically lambasted Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde. Tom Cruise, who gave his three Golden Globes back to the HFPA after controversies and scandals of the last two years, was not nominated for Best Actor for Top Gun: Maverick, although the film was nominated for Motion Picture- Drama and for Lady Gaga’s song “Hold My Hand.”

Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and Maria Schrader’s She Said fared poorly today, with nominations for Screenplay and Score for the former, and just supporting actress (Carey Mulligan) for the latter. No women directors were nominated, despite a standout season that included Charlotte Wells (Aftersun), Chinonye Chukwu (Till) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), and not one of the top Motion Picture nominees were directed by women.

Will Smith, who won the Globe and Oscar last year for King Richard, came up empty this morning for his new film, Emancipation, which was snubbed across the board.

Recent rule changes to allow animated and non-English language films to compete in the Globes’ top two motion picture categories didn’t bear any fruit today, with some thinking India’s RRR might break into Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film earned two nominations, for Non-English Language Film and Song (“Naatu Naatu”). The film was not India’s Oscar submission and therefore cannot be nominated in the corresponding category at the Academy Awards, but can be nominated anywhere else.

Brendan Fraser received a nomination for Best Actor – Drama for The Whale but recently stated that he will not attend the ceremony after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) didn’t act when he allegded he was groped by former HFPA president Philip Berk at a 2003 luncheon at the Beverly Hilton. Berk denied the allegations, saying he only pinched Brendan as a joke. No charges have been filed.

In television, Abbott Elementary was the most-nominated show with five, including four acting nods. Next was The Crown, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy and The White Lotus with four nominations apiece.

Amazon’s billion-dollar Lord of the Rings gamble The Rings of Power was snubbed entirely, while HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon earned nominations for Drama Series and non-binary performer Emma D’Arcy as lead actress.

Among the Globes’ big changes with the awards and eligibility, the HFPA has created more categories by breaking up its supporting actor and supporting actress honors into separate awards for musical-comedy or drama TV series and limited/anthology series or TV movie. Previously the supporting acting TV categories included contenders from ongoing TV series, limited series and TV movies.

The upcoming Golden Globes is set to return to NBC on January 10, 2023. The network, which owns the rights to the annual awards show, has broadcast the Globes since 1996 but declined to air the 79th edition of the awards show earlier this year in the wake of an entertainment industry boycott sparked by February 2021 Los Angeles Times exposés that revealed Golden Globes organization The Hollywood Foreign Press Association had no Black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices. After internal overhauls of rules, oversight, banning members from accepting gifts and introducing a hotline for reporting misconduct, splitting the the HFPA into two separate entities (one that manages the group’s philanthropy as a non-profit, one that will put on the show as a for-profit org) and more than doubling its membership by adding 103 new international journalists and 21 additional members who are U.S.-based journalists working for outlets abroad. The HFPA says they now have a voting pool that is 52 percent female and 51.5 percent racially and ethnically diverse.

The 2023 Golden Globes will be hosted by Jerrod Carmichael and will air live from the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday, January 10, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.

Here is the complete list of nominations.

This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
