‘The Favourite’ leads 2018 British Independent Film nominations (BIFA)

Not too surprisingly, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Queen Anne period piece The Favourite grabbed the most nominations from the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) today. The Venice Film Festival-winning film earned 13 mentions including Best Actress for Olivia Colman and both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in supporting actress. Weisz was also nominated for Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience, in Best Actress.

Also making a very strong showing was Bart Layton’s American Animals. Layton, a previous BIFA nominee, earned a Best Director nomination as part of his film’s 11-nomination total. Proving it’s not just American critics and industry groups that take part in category fraud, the film’s lead, Barry Keoghan, was nominated in Supporting Actor alongside co-star Evan Peters.

Michael Pearce’s Beast saw 10 nominations, including Best Film and Director and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here was next with 8 nominations including Best Film, Director and Joaquin Phoenix in Best Actor.

Stan & Ollie earned an impressive 7 nominations but only Steve Coogan made the cut for Best Actor, not John C. Reilly.

The 2018 British Independent Film Awards will take place in London on December 2nd.
