‘The Favourite’ leads Critics Choice Movie Awards noms with 14; female directors snubbed entirely

No female-directed films in Best Picture, no women in Best Director

The political period comedy The Favourite was definitely the favourite of the Broadcast Film Critics Association as the film earned a field-best 14 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominations this morning including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Ensemble and three individual acting noms for Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. 

Black Panther was next with 12, including Best Picture, best acting ensemble, best adapted screenplay for Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole  and best supporting actor for Michael B. Jordan.

In a strange turn, First Man, a that’s been virtually ignored by top tier critics, came in with 10 mentions including Best Picture and Best Director. 

Speaking of Best Director, and let’s for a moment. Like most the categories from the Critics’ Choice there are seven nominees. This is mostly to ensure they cover their bases as Oscar predictors less than it is about merit (again, top tier critics from groups like LAFCA and NYFCC are not members here, and vice versa) but their lineup is a bit of a head scratcher. While obvious nominees like Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), Alfonso Cuarón (ROMA) and Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) are there, missing are Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler, the director of the film with the 2nd highest number of nominations and Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk) in favor of Peter Farrelly (Green Book) and Adam McKay for the critically divisive Vice. Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) is nominated (and is the sole black director to be) but shockingly, or maybe not so, not a single woman. Seven nominees and no female director in a year that gave us LAFCA winner Debra Granik (Leave No Trace), Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Chloé Zhao (The Rider), Karyn Kusama (Destroyer) and more. To add insult to injury, of the group’s 10 films nominated for Best Picture not a single one is directed by a woman.

The group, which also has multiple genre categories (like action, comedy and sci-fi/horror) to ensure more celebrities attend their event, made room for films like Avengers: Infinity War, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Crazy Rich Asians, Game Night, Annihilation and A Quiet Place to receive nominations.

Winners will be revealed at the 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards gala, and broadcast on The CW Network on Sunday, January 13, 2019. No host announcement was made at this time.
